Did you know?

One of the largest sustainability problems facing the University of Utah’s campus is transportation. As a commuter campus, the majority of the U’s more than 30,000 students, faculty, and staff travel to and from the U everyday, creating an entire host of sustainability problems ranging from negative impacts on local air quality to creating parking spaces for single occupant vehicles.

What the Ubc does

The University Bike Collective is an ASUU group and Bennion Center student directed program that addresses sustainability in transportation at the U by encouraging and promoting cycling as a viable means of transportation.

Goals of the group:

  • Establish a mobile community bicycle shop that will provide services to users twice a week at a time and location that is convenient for users
  • Get building space to the UBC for use as a primary shop and permanent location
  • Create connections with other cycling groups on campus, in the city, and in the state
  • Offer cycling safety and maintenance instruction to the campus community.
  • Improve cycling related communication on campus by creating a bulletin board system to be placed on bicycle ribbon racks and managing an internet site http://www.ubike.org
  • Coordinate with university planning committees to ensure that future campus development incorporates features that are bicycle friendly
  • Research and study ways to improve the security of bicycles on campus
  • Enable the cycling community to improve the cycling atmosphere on campus by providing a centralized network in which individuals can take the initiative on projects of their choosing
