Upgraded Recycling System

Making recycling convenient

In June 2007, an upgraded and comprehensive paper program was implemented at the U of U.

Over the summer, we distributed more than 5,500 personal recycling bins, 1,700 classroom and laboratory bins, and 400 curbside totes throughout campus!

TONNAGE TOTALS FOR 2008!

Two types of paper bins

Office Pack: basically white paper, including envelopes and light colored papers

Mixed Paper: everything else including newspaper

How it works

Custodial staff collects, consolidates, and places recycled paper in 65 gallon street totes for curbside pick-up. The recyclables are taken to our Weyerhaeuser recycler and processed for the recycling market. The company then pays the University for the recycled tonnage.

Additional recyclable materials on campus

Aluminum

Aluminum can containers are distributed throughout campus. The Custodial Staff collects them when necessary and sends the cans to our local recycler.

Metals used in construction and renovation projects are also collected by the Buildings and Grounds Department and are recycled.

Cardboard

Cardboard is collected around campus and has been incredibly sucessful since July of 2007. In the future, the U of U will construct a cardboard recycling center will be implemented so that Custodial Services will collect cardboard from buildings and process and bail it so that it can be hauled to the local recycler. About 80% of the cardboard waste stream (1,120 tons) can be captured and recycled.

RecycleMania

This is a national collegiate recycling competition that takes place every spring. Some of our instate rivals have participated in this competition in the past. This coming event will be our first year to show them up.
