Alternative Energy Sucesses
Windpower
The University of Utah was recognized as number 10 in the nation for total renewable energy purchased by the U.S. E.P.A.’s Green Power Partnership program.
In 2005 the University selected a proposal from a wholesale REC distributor called Sterling Planet. The selection of RECs from this wholesaler enabled the University to support the development a greater amount of renewable energy through the purchase of nearly five times as many RECs compared to RMPs Blue Sky program due to Sterling Planet’s less expensive price.
This approach enables the University to purchase RECs at the most competitive rate available and thereby make the U’s program, we believe, the most cost effective way for individuals to fund new wind energy in the nation.
Through working with Finances, Development and Plant Operations, an online payment method was developed to make this program easy for everyone to access. University faculty and staff can even make payments through payroll deduction.

The University’s wind energy fund is open for participation by anyone. The cost ($3/mwh) is very low compared to many other programs throughout the nation, and is more than six times cheaper than typical schemes. Furthermore, because donations are made to the University, contributions are tax deductible.
